Russia ranks among top 5 states least dependent on global Websites

MOSCOW, Dec 29 (PRIME) -- Russia has joined the top five countries with the least dependence on the global Internet platforms and became one of the top two with over 75% of population using the Internet, the communications service said late on Monday after a research of its Federal State Unitary Enterprise General Radio Frequency Centre.

“It is explained by high-quality own services – the local search engine and social networks are very popular,” the watchdog said.

The communications service also said that YouTube is irreplaceable in Russia at present because of the lack of a local direct analogue. “With the appearance of a popular analogue, Russians’ dependence on foreign Internet platforms will decrease even more,” the authority said.

The research sought to see how deep foreign Internet platforms, mainly U.S. ones, have penetrated information spaces of other states, what part of the population use them, and how much Russians depend on them.

The use of Facebook, Google, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, and Twitter were analyzed in 24 countries with a different size of population, geographical location, and the level of Internet penetration.
